Q Writing Assignment #1 Directions: A. Read- “The Vernacular Tradition” (pages 3-11), and then select one (1) writing from any one of the following topic areas: Gospel, Songs of Social Change, Jazz or Sermons and Prayers, and also select one (1) writing from a different topic area. You can quickly view the topic areas and their selections in Table of Contents-The Vernacular Tradition, pages ix-x. (The topic areas of Rhythm & Blues and Hip Hop are excluded from this assignment; these topic areas will be covered later in the course). For example, you might select "This Little Light of Mine" from Gospel topic area, and "Nina Simone's Four Women" from Songs of Change topic area. B. Write -First, indicate what your first selection is, and its respective topic area. Then, write an analysis of the first selection, covering: 1. your reasons for choosing this selection-what does it mean to you? 2. How does this selection exemplify The Vernacular Tradition? Here, you must directly make reference to material in pages 3-11 and use examples from the selection itself. 3. Finally, discuss why your selection is a good example of its topic area. Do this by directly referencing the introduction to the topic area. For example, see the introduction to Gospel on pages 11-12; each topic area has an introduction. The literature of a region is a reflection of its customs, beliefs, and in case of the African American literature, the vernacular literature in the form of the songs of the church, the prayers, the sermons, the emerging hip-hops, the jazz, and many more, that were a part of the vernacular tradition, are a reflection of the oral traditions practiced by the societies. The oral tradition was primarily divided into two categories, the Sacred Tradition and the Secular Tradition. From the Sacred Tradition this assignment discusses the song ‘A City Called Heaven’ from the Spirituals and the Work Song ‘Pick a Bale of Cotton’ from the Secular Tradition.
